"Ascribe to the Lord glory due His name;
worship the Lord in the splendor of His holiness.
The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the Lord thunders over the mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
the voice of the Lord is majestic...
The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
he Lord is enthroned as King forever.
The Lord gives strength to His people;
the Lord blesses His people with peace."
Psalm 29:2-4, 10-11
If there is one thing I come away with from these few verses it is that our God is truly majestic! His all-powerful nature should invoke in us complete awe, reverence, and fear!
As I was reading this passage, one memory from my childhood came flooding back to my mind. When I was younger, my dad was a professional race car driver (seriously!), and there were a few times we travelled to Arizona and New Mexico for bigger, televised races. At the age of 6 or 7, I distinctly remember driving at night along the highway in one of these states, sitting in the back trunk area of our twelve-person passenger van (so illegal, I know) as a great storm was happening all around us. The experience is ingrained in my mind of listening to the roaring thunder and watching the flashes of lightning hit the desert floor around us. It was incredible, beautiful, and absolutely terrifying. But it was something that I will never forget. The power in the sounds and the mystery of the sights took my breath away while simultaneously making me want to cover my eyes.
Our God is the God whose power is greater than the scariest of storms and more awe-inspiring than the Northern Lights. He is wild and untamed. Our God is completely omnipotent. He holds all of the power possible - over time, space, the earth and all life - and our natural reaction should be to stand in total reverence before Him!
And I love the way that David ends this passage: with a promise. Much like the image of my great storm, after we have seen God's mighty power, His promise to strengthen and bless His people makes a lifelong impression!
Are you currently facing something that makes you feel weak or powerless? Take heart! "God is infinitely more powerful than the problem you are facing right now." Give it to Him, and trust that He will bless you with all of the strength and peace that you need. Claim His promise!
