"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven... For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matthew 6:21
Where is our money going? What are we spending our "hard-earned" income on? Clothes? Food? Bills? Other things ? It's easy while living in a culture/society that thrives on consumerism to feel the need to have the latest and greatest things, on top of simply feeling the need to have a lot of things. But is that money really even ours to begin with?
I've been struggling lately with the concept of money... the money that I earn from my job, that I am given in scholarships, that I get back in taxes. While it may go right into my bank account, I've been convicted over the fact that I must remember the money that is placed there is not really mine. Rather, it is both of and from the Lord. He has entrusted me with the sum I have, as small as it may be, to be used to serve His kingdom and for His glory.
So where is our money going, and what does that say of what we place our value in?
This question forces me to seriously check my heart... and I have no answers, other than that awareness of what we are spending our money on and why is the first step towards potential change. In the passage above from Matthew, it is brought to light the truth that where we place our treasures - including our money - reveals where our hearts are. Is your heart in serving the Lord? Or is it in serving self? If you feel convicted, good! I'm confident that you're not alone.
I pray that our ultimate desires would be for every aspect of our lives, including the way that we use the money we've been given, to be wholly dedicated to serving and revealing the glory of God.
